Traditional Chinese painting includes paintings of landscapes,figures, and birds-and-flowers. Comparing to the realistic Western paintings, it emphasizes particularly on the spirit of artists and the vitality of the nature. The highest goal of Chinese art was to achieve the utmost creativity, individuality and passion. Thus, the graphic arts and poetry became linked together to in way they never did in Europe.
中国的山水画的特点是画中有诗,讲究气韵俱盛,“山含情,水含笑”,山水画体现了中国人对自然的爱好,也表现了中国人特有的联结自然与文化的方式。中国古代文人多是坚定的理想主义者,当理想的追求与黯淡的现实发生不可调和的矛盾时,往往寄情于山水和自然,山水是中国文人的理想的精神家园。
The purpose of Chinese landscape paintings was not to reproduce exactly the appearance of the nature, but rather to grasp an emotion or atmosphere so as to catch the "rhythm" of nature. It emphasized more on "vivid in flavor and tone" than exactness. Lanscape painting embodied the profound love and admiration of Chinese literate to nature. Most of the ancient Chinese artists were idealists, when faced with the failure of the human order, cultivated men sought permanence within the natural world, retreating into the mountains to find a sanctuary from political setbacks or career disappointments.
